Located at the base of Mt. Diablo, the charming city of Clayton has many beautiful hiking trails, parks, award winning schools and the beautiful Oakhurst County Club and Golf Course. The City of Clayton has a rich history. It was founded in 1857 by Joel Clayton whose dream was to make the city a center for mining around Mt. Diablo. The charming downtown area has preserved the look and feel of the original buildings and many are still standing today. Among them is the oldest continuously operating business, the Clayton Club Saloon. The quaint downtown has many family owned restaurants including Ed’s Mudville Grill, Moresis Chophouse, La Veranda Cafe, Skipolinis Pizza and Canesas Brooklyn Heros Sandwich shop as well as a charming gift store, pet grooming, hair salons, a dental office, the Clayton Historical Museum, the Clayton Post Office and Endeavor Hall which can be rented for private events. Next to Skipolinis pizza are bocce courts that are used for league play and can be rented out during the off-season.
Beautiful Clayton has been known to be a family-friendly community and you can often see families enjoying the numerous trails that meander along the Marsh Creek bed and throughout the city. A very popular hiking and mountain biking spot is Mt. Diablo State Park which leads up to Mt. Diablo where you will enjoy sweeping views of Contra Costa. The city of Clayton hosts many community events throughout the year including the annual tree lighting ceremony, Oktoberfest, Clayton Art and Wine Festival, BBQ Rib cook off, Clayton Farmers Market, The annual 4th of July Parade, and a series of concerts in the park throughout the summer.
Clayton has 2 schools , Mt. Diablo Elementary and Diablo View Middle School. High School students have the option of attending Clayton Valley Charter High School, or can apply to a surrounding school in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.
